He completed both his undergraduate studies and medical school training at the University of Maryland. Upon completing medical school in 1987, Dr. Dhindsa did his medical internship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He was then awarded a two year research fellowship at Baylor, where he studied the mechanisms of age-related macular degeneration at a cellular level. Following his research fellowship, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Baylor University in 1993. Stimulated by his research in retina, he completed a medical and surgical retina fellowship at the University of Virginia in 1994. From his fellowship, Dr. Dhindsa was invited to be a professor at the renowned King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KESH) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is the world’s largest eye hospital and only patients with severe disease are seen. As a clinician, teacher, and researcher, he gained invaluable experience and learned new, complicated procedures. (It is estimated that one year at KKESH is equivalent to 5-10 years of experience in the US). During his 9 years overseas, he saw severe and rare retinal diseases while simultaneously training many ophthalmology residents and retina fellows. He was promoted to Senior Consultant (equivalent to a tenured professor) in 2000. In 2003, Dr. Dhindsa moved to the “Great American West” to provide exceptional retinal care to patients in Northern Nevada and California. In October 2011, he established HDRetina Eye Center. In addition to running his practice, Dr. Dhindsa volunteers in various developing nations across the globe from South America to Southeast Asia, educating local doctors and performing charitable surgeries.
